For Little Shops on the Island project in 2019 Setouchi Triennale at Megijima, we created a “Ping-pong theme park” with four original ping-pong tables (Marimba Ping-Pong, Seesaw Ping-Pong, an official size ping-pong table, and Setouchi Seven-player Ping-Pong). Yu Hara painted the floor, walls and the score board, with her images inspired by the themes of the ocean and table-tennis.
Marimba Ping-Pong table is assembled with wooden bars of different length. Determined by where the ping-pong ball lands during play, the table emits a note from low to high like a marimba. Every bar has a contact microphone beneath, through which the sound is amplified. Participants can enjoy the resulting tune while playing the game.
